FALL 2014-2015 PLANNING STUDIO I- BOZCAADA/ÇANAKKALE

 

This year a small town, Bozcaada will be studied in Planning Studio I and Planning Studio II during the fall and spring semesters of the academic year. Bozcaada is an island town and a district of Çanakkale that has 6 km away from the mainland. By 2013, 2643 people live in Bozcaada (TURKSTAT). This population drops around 1500 people during winter since it is a holiday resort that increases the population during summers. Bozcaada has an ethnically diverse population. In the beginning of 20th century half of the population was Greek-Rum. Today, there are a small number of Rum people that lives in Bozcaada.

Bozcaada is popular with its vineyards. Therefore, there are wineries in island.  However, the main sector in Bozcaada is tourism. Since 1990s, tourism sector has been developing and today it is the most fundamental economic activity of the island. Fishery is another sector of Bozcaada. Approximately 40-50 households live by fishery in island.

 

STUDIO PROCESS

The studio work will be composed of 7 phases:

  1. Introduction: Introduction to the course / Introduction to the Comprehensive Planning
  2. Analysis Phase: Definition of the boundaries of the region at which Bozcaada is located / Collection of data at regional and urban levels: Economic, Social, Environment and Natural Resources, Housing, Transport and Infrastructure / Introduction to Bozcaada urban area / Submission of the preliminary situation analysis reports and maps
  3. Site Visit to Bozcaada: Collection of data at regional and urban levels / Elaboration of data at site
  4. Revision of the Analysis Phase: Revision of the analysis report and maps of the existing situation / Submission and presentation of the Situation Analysis Report and associated maps
  5. Regional Level Analysis (Scale 1 / 100 000): Definition of the boundaries of the region at which Bozcaada is located / Definition of socio-economic context at regional level and restructuring of settlement hierarchy at sub-regional level / Identification of the regional determinants, problems and opportunities available for the development of the Bozcaada, vision and scenarios / Submission and presentation of the Regional Level Analysis
  6. Urban Level Analysis (Scale 1 / 25 000): Alternative macroform development based on the regional scenarios / Determination of conservation, transformation and development strategies / Submission and presentation of the Urban Level Analysis
  7. Site selection for CRP 202 Planning Studio

 

REQUIREMENTS AND THE GRADE POLICY

The requirements of this course are composed of a situation analysis, a site visit (physical condition study at the site), a 1/100.000 scale definition of socio-economic context at regional level and restructuring of settlement hierarchy at subregional level and 1/25.000 scale alternative macroform studies at the urban level. Class participation of the course includes number of critiques taken from the academic staff of the course. Active Moodle usage is expected throughout the course! Each submission (preliminary and finalized works) has to be uploaded to Moodle web page of the course. All announcements related to the course will be done through the Moodle system.
